Struggling with an eating disorder for many years, Michelle Vina-Baltsas faced her fears and addressed her issues. She talks about her current relationship with food, and how she learned to love herself. Michelle also describes how she treats herself with kindness.

Why do you think self love is important?

It’s the foundation of my life. When I’m not in self love, I’m in bashing, and that’s not a good place for me to be. There’s no happiness there.

What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love?

For me it was that I had to do it perfectly. I didn’t realize there were degrees – like I could get there. I thought, what about taking baby steps in between working for towards that. When I did that, I felt much better.

Who is one person who has changed your life for the better?

My Husband. I feel his love all the time.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Everything I need is already inside of me.

What is a self care habit that you practice regularly?

Meditation for me is a daily practice that has dramatically changed my life.

Do you have a favorite quote?

“I praise you for all I am, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Scripture.

Can you share with us a resource or an app that we can use to help our own self care practice grow?

I highly recommend “Calm.” It’s a free app with wonderful guided meditations.

What book are you reading right now?

Embody: Learning to Love Your Unique Body, by Connie Sobczak.

What is the one thing that you are most passionate about?

Helping women to see that they are enough. . . just as they are. Because they, too, are fearfully and wonderfully made.

Why is self love important to you?

Self love is important to me because it’s all about building awareness with yourself. It’s really developing a relationship with yourself.

What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love?

I think it was that I didn’t need it, that it was kind of fluffy. . . that I was tough enough that I didn’t need to take care of myself that way.

Who is one person who has changed your life for the better?

It sounds cliché, but it has to be, and is, my husband.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

My dad always told me that in life, there are a lot of different decisions you have to make. He always told me it’s okay to make different decisions in life, as long as it’s not something that crushes your soul.

What is a self care habit that you practice regularly?

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is something I listen to while I am working or when I am trying to fall asleep. There are videos on You Tube. I highly recommend searching for Gentle Whispering. She’s a great place to start.

What book are you reading right now?

The Opposite of Love, by Julie Buxbaum.

What is the one thing that you are most passionate about?

Learning and reading.

Why do you think self love is so important?

It really all begins with self love. If you don’t love yourself, you’re not going to make yourself a priority. You’re not going to think who you are on the inside is worth discovering, or uncovering. . . you’re not going to take care of yourself.

Self love is necessary for happiness.

What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love?

I think, really, fear. Fear that who I was on the inside wasn’t really good enough.

Who is one person who has changed your life for the better?

My kids. They definitely have helped me be a more loving person and a more compassionate person.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Education is never a waste.

What is a self care habit that you practice regularly?

I love automatic writing. I think it is important to find an outlet where you can express your true feelings. On a physical note, I take hot baths regularly.

What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? Awareness. Moments where I am not in self love, I am not really present.

Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? My teachers that I have been blessed to study with.

What is the best advice you have ever received? “If it feels good, you’re doing it right.”

What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? I call on my angels every day. I acknowledge their presence. The angels can only intervene in our lives if we ask, so I make a point to do that every day.

Do you have a favorite quote? “Never hesitate to trade your cow for a handful of magic beans.”

What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Listening. Listening to my heart, opening spaces, and holding spaces for people to listen to their own hearts.

I would have to say my husband. He is an incredibly secure, confident and grounded man.

My mom told me, “Don’t take care of the kids first. Make sure you take care of you first. Momma has to go first. If you go down, the baby goes down.”

I nap almost every day. Sleep is the number one thing that nurtures me and keeps me on track.

I suggest you create a vision board – draw out what it is that you really want without any judgement. Put it on paper and make sure you can see it every day.

I really have to say that to be alive and to be human and having the human experience keeps me going.

Nancie’s own burnout – 12 years ago, led her to let go of things that no longer served her. Working in a job that didn’t fulfill her and wasn’t consistent with her personal values, coupled with an unexpected car crash, led Nancie to start making different choices about where she worked and what she focused on. Of particular note, Nancie came to the difficult realization that she was creating a lot of her stress and overwhelm by her choices. In this interview, Nancie describes her journey from being completely burned out to being in a position to help others.

 

Nancie Vito is a coach and consultant who helps people who feel burned out to reduce stress, find fulfillment and boost happiness. After recovering from her own burnout, she founded Flourish in 2009, where she has inspired people who feel stuck (perhaps in a soul-crushing job) to take steps towards what they truly want. My dad. He is chronically ill, but he never complains. That has served me very well, especially in challenging times.

I do a morning worksheet from my book. I write down how I want to feel. I write down ten things I am grateful for. I write down a couple things I want to accomplish that day. Then I visualize my day.

Tracy Litt-Lester describes a low point in her life, and her journey to her epiphany, “I can believe in everything. I can believe in me.” She describes how this lightning bolt moment fueled her life choices. She taught herself how to fall in love with fear and it fueled her forward as she left her comfort zone, as she recognized fear is about staying “safe, and small, and comfortable.” By looking at fear differently, she learned to “let fear sit with you, instead of sit across from you.”

Why do you think self love is important?

If we can’t love ourselves, we can’t do anything properly - we cant love anyone else properly and we will self destruct.

What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love?

Me. Definitely me. There’s me, the real me, who I am becoming closer to being, but there was also the scared me that thought, “If I love myself, will anyone else love me? What happens if I let go of the mask?” But the fact of the matter is, when you let go of the mask, you not only love yourself, but the people around you love you more.

I honestly can’t think of one person. There were so many people out there that have helped me.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

“You’ve survived 100 percent of your worst days so far. Keep going.” What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Taking time to ground myself.
